ArTapoC is a programme focused on one site, the Cussac cave (Dordogne), Gravettian decorated and sepulchral cave (ca 29 ka cal BP) which provides a wealth of remains showing bear (previous) and human activity (marks, prints,…) preserved on a line of about 1.6 km.

The programme falls within a joint research programme (about 50 researchers) mainly financed by the French Ministry for Culture and Communication and whose problematic is wider. It is currently authorised according to a triennial operation (2010-12) which should be pursued (2013-2015).

It is the parietal artistic heritage which is here at the center of the problematic. The objective is to conduct an integrated and multidisciplinary study on decorated caves (carved) from a tridimensional tool in order to gather on the same material, as a tridimensional GIS, all of the documentary fields. For the first time, the 3D media use will help to carry out parietal art field surveys (until now, 3D was used in the final phase).

At the same time, the erosion process of cave surface and its impact on the preservation of works will be studied. In this perspective, we plan to create in Meshlab an operational module for the integration, interfacing and presentation of data on the 3D survey (GIS, in situ mapping of wall facies), tool which can be used for parietal art and taphonomy. ArTaPoc will comprise field and laboratories studies: study of wall roughness, mapping of eroded areas, thermo-aeraulic, microscopic study of granular disintegration (parietal sampling in the neighbouring cave of the Pigeonnier and bits fallen on the ground in Cussac).
