Abstract : 

XRF portable application in preliminary investigations about archaeological finding of the Estrada Collection

The Estrada Collection represents an important treasure collected across the years to celebrate the skills of blacksmiths, artisans and goldsmiths across the ages. To perform an archaeometrical investigation on this collection is of the greatest importance for its conservation and for the diffusion of the information to the archaeological community. A non destructive appraoch followed when needed by a microinvasive study is coherent with the importance and preciousness of the collection itself. The simplest is to carry on a compositional analyses by portable equipments such as an XRF or to introduce a small enough object into the chamber of an SEM equipped with an EDXS. XRF and EDXS are both dealing with the X-ray fluorescence of materials once excited by an high energy source as X-rays (X-Ray fluorescence) or as an accelerated electron beam (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) in an SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Both techniques are superficial having a penetration limited to around 1 micrometer into the surface of the specimen. Nevertheless the difference in power density and the sensitivity of the detectors make the difference together with the experience and background knowledge of the operator.

This lecture will summarize the first results over 300 objects of the collection made by gold or copper alloy, describing positive aspects and criticisms of the usage of a portable XRF.
